A Rant on Event Registration - has it become meaningless?

registrationWe just published the WIP monthly newsletter over the weekend, and I started off with a Rant on Event Registration - has it become meaningless? Well – I never expected the avalanche of responses - in fact the best response I’ve ever gotten to one of my newsletters.

Here’s what I said:

I’ve got a short rant if you’ll indulge me. What’s with event registration and attendance? There seems to be no correlation between who registers and who shows up. From what I understand from other event hosts, it also doesn’t correlate whether the event is free nor has a charge. Is it a function of too many events and activities that you try and cover your bases? Or is an event registration not really a commitment to attend? How many reminders are needed?

Here are some of the responses:

  • I honestly believe that the problem lies with conflicting events and unexpected business opportunities. … Several times I found myself wishing that there were fewer items to attend and that they would have had two different schedules so that I could have seen them…. My biggest complaint about most conferences these days is that too many people attend that are not there to be productive. … I believe that conferences need to attract more business attention as information that was once gained from the conference is now available on the internet. I think the focus on entertainment rather than knowledge will be the death of most conferences when budgets are tight and technology advancements in voice and video conferencing continue to surge forward.
  • First, let me say you did a bang up job on WIPJam! Thanks for your hard work and skill. I, for one, believe it paid off in spades…… Second, I understand completely the rant. I had 28 RSVP’s for my son’s 14th birthday and 7 showed up, sticking me with a bowling bill for 21, cake, gifts, the works. Multipled by 20, throw in a luncheon and drink tickets, and I only have a small taste of your frustration..
  • I think the mobile phone, ironically, has a lot to do with the change in attitude towards meeting up. When I grew up, you had a fixed time and place when you met someone and you stuck to it. In the mobile age, fixed arrangements are becoming less common. It’s more a case of ‘I’ll call you when I’m near’ or ‘I’ll call you when I’m free and find out where you are’ and lots of those ‘maybe’ meet-ups never happen. And I think this has spilled over into professional events and meetings too. We just don’t take the RSVP as seriously.
  • Thanks for the thoughts. As a registered attendee who did attend, I would simply say that there are many competing activities that foil the best intentions of those who sign up.
  • I like your rant about registrations. On a much smaller scale, I have the same rant about internal meeting invitations and people who don’t manage them well (accept then don’t show up; don’t reply but “magically” appear; respond tentatively but never confirm one way or the other). I’ve threatened to stop putting on some demos/reviews if people don’t start behaving!
  • I can relate
  • Thank you for the note but I am not sure if the rant was absolutely necessary…. I will not be joining you guys should I ever have the opportunity again as I did not appreciate the rant. I believe it is a risk an event organiser takes when organising something like this and I am sure no-shows have very valid reasons. Having been involved in some event organisation myself, there will never be a correlation between registrations and attendance.
  • Appreciate your note and your rant about people not attending. I was one such person who could not attend the WIP Jam session that morning, due to the fact I had to indulge a customer at CTIA. I think it is rude not to attend, but more often than not, I have seen there are too much packing of stuff in these events, that you do tend to ensure you can decide between a couple of priorities on a certain day.

We tend to get a toss up at Jam, with about 1/3 of registrants not showing at all, and 1/3 that magically appear, and due to us holding Jams within other big events with distractions, there is a bit of flow throughout the day. So we typically ‘register’ about double the number of folks that are our ideal size of event. There is one company in particular that regularly registers 3-4 people, and not one shows up! This creates a bit of a challenge cutting off registration and having a waiting list, as we really do want the folks that really want to be there to be there.

As an event planner for over 25 years, I know what goes on behind the scenes that make registration important including:
• logistics like having enough lunch and chairs; yes, we do have to pay for lunches that don’t get eaten, so need to make some fairly accurate guestimates,
• and more importantly it’s also about getting the right content for the audience

But in addition to sympathy for event organizers, I’d like to see more respect shown for the speakers and the effort they put into their presentations. What continues to astound me are speakers that show up just for their speaking slot and then disappear. Folks attend events not only to listen to speakers but to have the opportunity to meet them.  As well, if you are a morning speaker and disappear, it’s also immensely disrespectful to the other speakers at the end of the day.

0608-registration_lgPlease consider this the next time you sign up for something – as a speaker, conference or birthday party attendee! Remember, we want to make the event right for you, but we need to know who YOU are!

We are going to be sending out a survey to previous Jam attendees (we’ve organized 8 now), to get feedback on how we can make them better, and perhaps take a little less guessing out of our registration numbers.

Carnival of the Mobilists #166

Carnival Jam

The Carnival is always worth waiting for!

Welcome to #166 – the Carnival of Mobilists’ one hundred and sixty-sixth post, which by my calculations means the Carnival has been active for over 3 years now. This is the first time WIP has hosted, although we have been an active friend of the Mobilists for almost since inception. Our conclusion – hosting and reading all the posts is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with great reads!  Enjoy…..

Our very diverse set starts with Dave Levy from Most Likely To Die Alone (just checking out that threat advisory system is worth a visit); where he takes a different twist on the mobile privacy debate and asks the question: “Will we, as audience members and mobile phone users, care nearly as much?”

Wading into the mobile operating system quagmire as he often does, Andreas Constantinou from Vision Mobile, goes behind the scenes to find out why LiMo is still catching up to Google and Nokia and why its effectiveness will be limited - unless LiMo goes back to the drawing board. What does this mean for the future of mobile Linux?

Volker Hirsch from Volker’s Thoughts takes a different twist on reviewing the impact of the iPhone by looking at Apple’s assault on existing gaming platforms through iPhone and iPod Touch.

Interviewing Tomi Ahonen, Author of Mobile as 7th of the Mass Media gave Antoine RJ Wright “a good bit of a kick in the pants” and some new insight regarding how he viewed the mobile industry.

Andrew Grill from London Calling, collected some mobile gems from Rory Sutherland at Ogilvy and Chris Carmichael of British Airways when they spoke to a room full of brands and agencies in London at the UK MMA meeting.

Dennis Bournique from WAP Review, one of my favorite bloggers, went to an Ovi App Store developers event at Nokia’s Silicon Valley office in Mountain View and gives the low down in “Ovi App Store Details“.

Post of the Week: Goes to Andrew Grill at London Calling, for his gems on mobile marketing; and reminding us how Twittering can be a good way to take notes for future posts (not to self…..) 

Next Carnival: oh – lol it is at London Calling! Tune in there next week for Carnival #167.

If you are interested in submitting a post or hosting a Carnival yourself, find out more here.

PS – Our next WIPJam Day for Developers is fast approaching, April 2, 2009 at International CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas. Just added: an After Party, the Dev Program Bowling SmackDown and Jameoke. Request your invitation today, as we are ready to close registration.

WIP Jam After Party at CTIA Wireless in Vegas - April 2.

Well we don’t think we can just stop jamm’n after our Day for Developers is over at the upcoming International CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas.  Our sponsors and developers didn’t either - so we added an After Party!

And in true WIP fashion, we wanted an event that was fun, interactive, and really condusive to great networking.  Why not bowling!

Wait for it - we are hosting the Dev Program Bowling SmackDown event after Jam starting at 8:30pm at the Lucky Strike Bowling Lanes and Lounge.  Ten Developer Programs including Access, Sony Ericsson, Symbian Foundation, AT&T Dev Central, RIM-Blackberry, Microsoft-Windows Mobile, Oracle, and Orange Partner will square off joined by Jam attendees.  Rumour has it that Symbian is bringing 10 different colored t-shirts for the teams!  We will announce the team captains and team names next week.

Symbian Foundation Let's Loose We are also pleased to again have Stephen King from Mob4Hire lead Jameoke - it was so popular at MWC in Barcelona.  We’ll have 2 guitars and a set of bongo drums, and lots of good songs - so be sure to join in to the fun.

This is an INVITE ONLY party, so you have to sign up and attend our WIP Jam Day for Developers to get your ticket…. or suck up to a WIPster or sponsor for a few additional tickets that will be around.

Jam on!

MWC 2009 - So that’s it for another year in Barcelona

I thought I would give you a few impressions of this year’s Mobile World Congress and some of the surrounding activities such as the WIP Jam session we hosted. It should also serve as a useful comparison to the other behemoth in the mobile calendar, CTIA Wireless, which is fast (too fast!) approaching.

Forgoing the first couple of days I missed a lot of the hype and launch hysteria that too often makes MWC so tiresome – sadly I also missed a couple of great parties! - but in between meetings on the Wednesday I did get the chance to stroll about and see a bit of the show.

First impression was that the numbers were down, noticeably down. The official count was down around 10% but it certainly felt like more. Perhaps many people only came on the first couple of days but Wednesday felt pretty quiet. That said, the mood was generally more optimistic than I was expecting. Now I’m not saying that it was full of people dancing about (actually, that was the case on the Cboss stand) but there certainly was positive energy and cool demos being given all over the place.

There weren’t too many show-stealing phones on display, my pick of them would be the HTC Magic (Android), Toshiba TG01 (Windows Mobile), Palm Pre (WebOS), Nokia N97 and the Sony Ericsson Idou (Symbian).

The biggest effect I saw was from the one notable absentee. Apple’s iPhone has really pushed the industry into embracing touchscreen phones – and possibly more importantly, into educating the average consumer about the ability to extend their phone through the use of third party applications. The results of this could be seen in the announcement of a bunch of new app stores, in particular Ovi from Nokia.

Symbian Foundation sings Lions Sleep tonite at Jameoke!

On the social side of things, just a special mention to the GoMo News Blender followed by the WIP Jameoke at Bel Chica on the Wednesday night. Great informal night in a really atmospheric bar (rated for 75 occupants but probably hosting upwards of 200 for most of the night – as you can imagine, it was quite intimate!). To make the evening even more fun, we had live music and an open mike with many guests joining in energetic renditions of songs such as “Brown Eyed Girl”. Thanks to Stephen King from Mob4Hire who was the lead musician and organized the songs for the nite.  Almost as popular was the 6 meters of pizza that turned up (and almost instantly disappeared beneath a throng of hungry developers)!

Thursday saw the return of the WIP Jam event – a developer event with a difference. An informal gathering of developers, thought leaders and industry experts meeting with the genuine intention of networking and discussing issues that are important and relevant to the current developer community, regardless of platform, carrier or location.

Many of the issues that could be seen in the larger show were raised during the WIP Jam, and all of us at WIP would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who attended – as always the contributions were terrific. Special BIG THANKS to our sponsors: Adobe, Symbian Foundation, ACCESS, Sony Ericsson, Oracle, Windows Mobile, and O2 Litmus.  We put some of the photos up on our Facebook Group site and will get more up soon!

Inpanel with Caroline Lewko (WIP), David Wood (Symbian), James Parton (O2 Litmus), Christopher David (Sony Ericsson), Jason Lim (Microsoft), Nicholas Landrin (I Source)

The proceedings got underway with the “unpanel” - a mirror universe version of a standard panel session, in which the panel quizzes and starts a dialogue with the audience. This session really set the tone for the rest of the day with a lot of discussion focused on app stores, not all of it positive. There were some very interesting points made about the long-term benefits of app stores, as the number of apps continues to rise and the ability to get noticed diminishes.

Another hot area of discussion during the unpanel was fragmentation. This was also followed up in the discussion groups in the afternoon with some very interesting debate focusing on the ONE-API and BONDI initiatives aiming to bring some consolidation and standardization to the scene.

After an extremely good lunchtime networking session, all of the discussion groups were well attended in the afternoon. In particular there was standing room only at the Maps Mashup discussion, with Laura Diaz from Navteq and Patric Nordström from Idevio giving really helpful advice about careful checking of T&C’ s when licensing map data.

The “Mak’n Money” discussion resulted in complex flow diagrams and some great ideas around how to look at alternative revenue channels such as “freemium vs. premium”, ad-subsidized apps and discovery apps thanks to discussion leader Harald Neidhardt of Smaato, Raj Singh of Skyfire and Sean O’Sullivan from Dial 2 Do (check out his MWC wrap up here).

Overall, the mood of the WIP Jam was constructive and positive with some real innovation and networking taking place. In particular, the afternoon sessions had the theme of collaboration about them – a point that was rightly picked up by WIP’s own Caroline Lewko, who chaired the day and Larry Berkin of Access who co-hosted the wrap up session.

A couple of questions were left hanging as rhetorical questions, but perhaps developers would be well-advised to keep in mind:

What does a successful ecosystem look like?

What is a successful go-to-market strategy?

Now the answers may be different depending upon who you are, but I suspect that with the spirit of collaboration there may be more commonality in the answers than there has been in previous years.

Looking forward, the next WIP Jam will be taking place on Thursday, April 2, 2009 in Las Vegas at CTIA Wireless and we intend to incorporate some of the MWC hot topics in that event. Carrying forward, the theme for our event at CTIA will be the many aspects of collaboration for the developer community.

Vegas, WIPJAM Yeah Baby! See you there!

Join WIP for our popular Day for Developers at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The best mobile developers meet key leaders of the mobile ecosystem in interactive sessions where we are serious about no panels, no ppt and no ties!  The swag is looking really good.  Just a few spots left.

Tip #5 Go Green if you can —bring your own refillable water bottle; use the subway, collect written collateral only if you are going to use it rather than it ending up in your hotel garbage.

TIP #6 Cut costs – bring an unlocked phone get a local sim card; ask the person in front of you if they are going to the same place; buy snacks at the grocery store and bring to MWC. We have booked a 5 bedroom apartment that gives us lots more room and also save us some money!

We hope you find this helpful! Again, let us know if you have any updates or comments. Follow us on Twitter for late minute updates, www.twitter.com/mobilejam
The WIP team of Caroline, Teresa, Arv and Ed looking forward to seeing you next week. If there is something we can help you with - make a connection or point you in the right direction - don’t hesitate to ask.

Announcing Speakers and Agenda for Mobile Jam in Barcelona

The Agenda is set, the speaker area ready!  Twenty six (26) speakers, 2 Unpanels and 8 Discussion Topics.  A few spots left for the WIP Mobile Jam session in Barcelona, so sign up now at: http://wipjam.com/subscribe/

We are really stoked to announce the speakers and topics.

We’ll get started with our UnPanel on Survival Strategies for Developers and talk about investment, revenue models, how to make good management decisions, and where to find the wins and partnerships in the ecosystem.  Speakers include: Christopher David of Sony Ericsson, Nicholas Landrin of I-Source, Jason Lim of Microsoft, and James Parton of O2 Litmus.

Our Discussion Groups are always lively - ok noisy - with lots of sharing of information, sometimes debating of points, but always valueable for everyone. Discussion groups are focused on uncovering the information, resources and people necessary for successful mobile application development.  We sit in circles of chairs for maximum participation.

Here are the topics for our Mobile Jam discussion groups and their respective speaker leads and some photos from previous Jams:
