Get Yourself Into GetJar’s Gettie Awards

Bruce Jones from GetJar came over to Berlin as a sponsor for our Jam Session at IT-Profits earlier this month, and he shared the exciting news that GetJar had just the day before announced that it had delivered its 1 billionth download. Since then, the company's gone from strength to strength: its CEO, Ilja Laurs, appeared on CNBC talking about the company's success, and it also announced that it closed on its second round of venture funding. So congrats all around to the team at GetJar!

I was able to catch up with Bruce this week for a chat about all the news, as well as to learn more about The Gettie Awards, in which GetJar is recognizing the top apps on a number of different platforms, and giving away tons of great prizes to developers. Entries close June 30, so be sure to visit the Getties site and submit your app!

Carlo Longino, WIP: Hi Bruce! Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do at GetJar.

Bruce Jones, GetJar: I started the first week of May as the Senior...

Ich Bin Ein Berliner! What’s Intel Bringing to WIPJam Next Week?

Berlin is the mobile place to be for WIP in June:

  • Droidcon last week (technically we were still in May)
  • MLOVE ConFestival on the 23-25 of June
  • And of course next week WIP's headquarters move to Berlin for a week, as Carlo comes over from the US to join me for Mobile Monday Berlin and our WIPJam at IT Profits/LinuxTag on the 9th! (There's still plenty of time to register and get your free tickets, so come join us!)

In addition to the Android App Store competition, Droidcon was also full of cool presentations (all available here) and I was able to interview Kerstin Monzel and Jonas Kollberg from Intel, who presented at the event and will be at the WIPJam next week, too.

While California was abuzz with the Google TV announcement, and Intel powered set top boxes, we chatted more about the mobile device side of things.

Intel Atom Developer programWIP:  Judging by the warm tweets welcoming Quake running at 120fps on Moorestown... Your presentation at Droidcon was quite popular!  What was it...

Google Adds Apps To Search Results

Google announced yesterday that it's added iPhone and Android apps to its search results when users search from a mobile device running one of those platforms. So, for instance, if a user searches for "download shazam", the top search result should be a link to the relevant app in the Android Market or iTunes App Store. In theory, anyway -- Marshall Kirkpatrick from Read/Write Web says there are still some kinks that need to be worked out (indeed, I can't seem to get it to work on my Droid Eris running Androind 2.1 yet).

One of Thibaut's current interests is what he calls "App Store Placement Optimization", or APO for short. Just like search engine optimization, APO is concerned with making apps appear at the top of search and other listings in app stores. As the number of apps grows and grows, APO will become an important skill for companies and people trying to drive downloads and sales of their apps.

The question then becomes, how will Google's app results work, and how will...
